Thorpe Park Business Trip

GCSE Business students from Park Community School get the opportunity each year to visit Thorpe Park as part of their course. This year 46 students made the trip in September and experienced first-hand the marketing strategy of a large PLC organisation.

An early start enabled the students to sample the scare rides as well as attend a management-led seminar on Marketing at Thorpe Park, where they learned that Thorpe Park is being developed as the premier scare rides theme park in the Merlin Group.
An insight was gained into the marketing strategy of creating a “bad boy” image for Thorpe Park, to target “thrill Seekers” in the 18 – 24 year old age bracket. Students were able to ask questions to a member of the marketing team responsible for introducing the disco nights and were shown part of the campaign to generate controversy for new rides like 'SWARM' which opened in 2012.This new ride had helped keep the visitor numbers comparable with last year despite the wet weather.

The students are in Year 10 on a GCSE Business Studies course at the School. They have been learning about different types of ownership and were keen to explore a PLC business with a controversial marketing strategy. Mrs Thomas, who organised the day, said the students will use the information from the day in their GCSE coursework.
