Modern Languages

All students begin French and Spanish in Year 7 and have the opportunity to continue these languages until at least the end of Year 9.  They are encouraged to choose one or both languages as a GCSE Option in Years 10 and 11.  The Department also offers German as an additional GCSE Languages Option in Key Stage 4.

We believe that all students can benefit from the study of a Modern Foreign Language and are given the opportunity to do so through a wide variety of proven teaching and learning techniques.  This includes the use of ICT and the active use of the target language as much as possible.  Courses are carefully planned and regularly reviewed, integrating the language and the culture to encourage understanding and wider appreciation for a fast changing world in which aptitude in a language is playing an increasingly important role.  Students are given the opportunity to make contact with France and Spain either through residential experiences or email/class links.
